Turnip Boy is back in this comedy action adventure sequel ready to commit more felonies! This time teaming up with the Pickled Gang to execute the perfect heist in the Botanical Bank. Explore, loot and take on shootouts against a cast of hilarious veggie enemies and you may discover the secrets of why Turnip Boy’s world has become what it is today.

Story

The title of the game is fairly self explanatory in this instance, the sequel to Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion, this time you are playing as Turnip Boy robbing a bank. There’s throwbacks to the first game in the story, as the head of the Pickled Gang was friends with your father and is roping you into another escapade to get rich, by whatever means. The story isn’t massively complicated but it’s surprisingly rich and engaging, you get to know a cast of characters both in the gang and residing in the bank, each with quirky personalities and fun tasks to complete and it’s delightful to come across a new unique character.

Gameplay

Differing from it’s predecessor, Robs a Bank is actually a roguelite, which I wasn’t expecting but was delighted by. You have to keep entering the bank every day, battle through enemies, collect weapons, meet characters, complete tasks, shake down customers for cash, and ultimately find a way into the bank’s vaults. The more money you collect, the more items you can purchase on the black market, and the more upgrades you can buy for yourself and your weapons to allow you more time in the bank or power in your attacks. Each run you’re getting stronger, defeat more bosses and can go further into the bank. Each weapon has a different play style, so you have to get used to that quite quickly because the runs are fast paced, but it’s fun to work out what weapons work best for your playstyle.

Graphics and Visuals

I love the design of the game, it’s vibrant, bright and colourful with a retro design. The areas are filled with furniture or items unique to the area, but the best designs in the game are the characters. All variations of vegetables and fruits, each are brimming with personality and detail that match their character. The weapons you find along the way are fun and unique designs too, as well as the enemies and bosses you come across.

Longevity

The game is around 4 hours, or 6 hours for completionists that want to complete all tasks and collect all funky hats. I found the game very well paced, the more money you get, the more upgrades you can get, and I found I could get an upgrade of some variety on more or less each run, so this prevented the gameplay from feeling stale. The game has a great flow, and while not overly long, it’s an enjoyable 4-6 hours for sure.

Conclusion

I really enjoyed this game. I went in blind not really knowing what to expect, but Turnip Boy Robs a Bank absolutely exceeded my expectations. I found the story engaging, the characters thoroughly charming and delightful, I had a good giggle playing this game. But the roguelite gameplay style of the game is the real star of the show, it has a great flow, is well paced and it’s great fun to shoot around and pick up loot. I would 100% recommend this to anyone looking for a bright, fun, cozy shooter. Although there are guns, and I understand that isn’t for everybody, it isn’t threatening, a genuinely very enjoyable experience and cozier than you would expect.
